Port Louis Heritage and Street Food Walking Tour

Behind two unassuming doorways, incense, garlands and diyas give way to vanilla, spices, lentils and herbs. These are not museum displays. They are places where belief, food and daily Mauritian life still meet.

Beneath the Central Market's iron and glass, conversation moves between fruit, vegetables and spices. We find our place in the rhythm, then share a fresh dholl puri and cold sugarcane juice at the heart of the market.

At the Jummah Mosque, architecture opens the story of the Muslim community in Mauritius. Afterwards, we settle into a nearby tea shop for local snacks and the kind of conversation that makes history feel personal.

Beneath the Chinatown arch, Chinese immigration and trade come into focus through an old pharmacy, Sino-Mauritian boulettes and traditional sweets. The story leads us to a community-kept pagoda, where memory and ritual remain quietly present.

From Fort Adelaide, known locally as La Citadelle, the morning gathers into one view. The harbour, the city centre and the mountains reveal how closely the quarters and communities of Port Louis sit beside one another.

We return past the old prison and through Company Garden. The Photography Museum opens a window onto earlier Port Louis before the walk closes at Pem Wood's gallery, with Mauritian nature and culture still being carved into wood.
